Coherent Breathing: The Five-Breaths-a-Minute Reset

Coherent breathing slows you to about five or six breaths a minute, no holds, no counting drama. Here's the science of resonance breathing and how to start.

Breathing techniques tend to arrive gift-wrapped in mysticism, which is exactly the wrapping paper that makes me put a thing back on the shelf. So let me introduce coherent breathing the way I wish someone had introduced it to me: it's arithmetic. You breathe in for about five seconds, out for about five seconds, and keep going. That's it. No holds, no chanting, no energy fields. Five to six slow breaths a minute instead of your usual twelve to sixteen. I started doing it on the subway during a deadline month because it was the only technique I could remember at 8 a.m., and it turned out the boring one is also one of the best-studied. Here's what's actually going on.

What coherent breathing is

Coherent breathing, also called resonance or resonant breathing, means slowing your breath to roughly five to six full cycles per minute, with the inhale and exhale about equal. At five seconds in and five seconds out, you're at six breaths a minute; stretch to six seconds each way and you're at five. Breathe through your nose if you can, let the belly do the moving, and keep the effort low. It should feel like slow, not like straining. That's the entire technique. What makes it interesting isn't the recipe. It's why this particular tempo does something the other tempos don't.

Why five to six breaths a minute, specifically

Your heart rate isn't steady; it speeds up slightly when you inhale and slows when you exhale, a healthy wobble called heart rate variability, or HRV. Separately, your blood pressure runs its own slow control loop through pressure sensors called baroreceptors. When you breathe at around five to six breaths a minute, the breathing rhythm and that blood-pressure loop line up and reinforce each other, the way a well-timed push amplifies a playground swing. The result is that the heart-rate swings get much bigger at this pace than at any other, which is why researchers call it the resonance frequency; the entire field of HRV biofeedback is essentially training people to breathe at it (Lehrer & Gevirtz, 2014, Frontiers in Psychology). Bigger swings are good news here: they reflect a nervous system with its brakes engaged and responsive.

Zoom out from the mechanism and the broader evidence points the same way. A systematic review of slow-breathing studies found that techniques in this sub-ten-breaths-per-minute range consistently increase HRV, shift the autonomic balance toward the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest side, and are accompanied by reports of relaxation and reduced anxiety and stress (Zaccaro et al., 2018, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience). The usual honesty caveats apply: many studies are small, and slow breathing is a nudge to your stress physiology, not a cure for anything. But as nudges go, this one has more instrumentation behind it than almost anything else you can do with zero equipment on a moving train.

No chanting, no subscription, no incense. Just a tempo slow enough for your blood pressure to notice.

How to actually do it

You can start tonight. The full practice is just the following, held for five to ten minutes:

  1. Sit or lie somewhere you won't need to talk. Drop your shoulders. Unclench the jaw you didn't know was clenched.
  2. Inhale gently through your nose for a slow count of five, letting your belly expand rather than your chest heave.
  3. Exhale through your nose for the same slow count of five, without pushing the air out.
  4. Repeat. When your mind wanders to the thing it always wanders to, come back to the count. That's the rep.

As for when: anywhere you'd otherwise be refreshing a feed. I run it on the subway with headphones in and nothing playing, in the elevator before a meeting that deserves a calmer version of me, and at my desk in the mid-afternoon trough. Nobody can tell you're doing anything, which for a New Yorker is half the appeal.

The failure mode is trying too hard: gulping huge breaths, straining to hit exact seconds, treating it like a workout. Keep the breaths modest and the counting approximate. If five seconds feels like a stretch, start at four and lengthen over a week or two. Some light-headedness means you're overdoing the depth, so ease off. And if you have a respiratory or cardiovascular condition, check with a professional before taking up any structured breathing practice.

Coherent vs box vs 4-7-8

Where does this sit in the crowded breathing aisle? Box breathing adds holds at both ends, which some people find focusing and others find claustrophobic under real stress. The 4-7-8 pattern has a long exhale and a hold that make it a strong sedation tool for bedtime, but it takes practice to do comfortably. Coherent breathing is the one with no holds and no asymmetry to remember, which makes it the easiest to sustain for ten straight minutes and the one I hand to people who bounced off the others. They're tools, not teams; I use coherent breathing for daytime steadiness and Feelsy's built-in 4-7-8 exercise when the goal is sleep, usually with a slow texture on screen giving my eyes a tempo to borrow. Pacing your breath against a slowly folding visual is considerably easier than pacing it against your own impatience.
