How to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve (What's Real, What's Not)
The vagus nerve is the internet's favorite calm switch. Here's what it really does, what actually tones it, and which viral hacks are a waste of your time.

The vagus nerve had a rough decade. It went from a piece of anatomy almost nobody outside a physiology class had heard of to a full wellness celebrity, blamed for your anxiety and credited with your calm, and sold back to you in the form of humming apps, ice packs, and gadgets that clip to your ear for the price of a decent coat. I went in a skeptic, because I go into everything a skeptic, especially things trending on the same feed that keeps trying to sell me gut-cleanse gummies. Here's the surprise: under the hype there's a genuine mechanism, and one or two of the free techniques actually earn their reputation. Most of the paid ones do not.
What the vagus nerve actually is
Vagus means wandering in Latin, and the name is the most honest thing about the whole trend. It's a long, wandering nerve that runs from your brainstem down through your neck and chest into your gut, touching the heart and lungs on the way. It's the main highway of your parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-digest branch, the counterweight to the fight-or-flight side that your inbox keeps flooring all day. When people say something is calming your nervous system, this is a big part of the plumbing they're waving at.
Two details make it interesting instead of just anatomical. First, most of its fibers run upward, from body to brain, not the other way around, so a huge amount of what your brain knows about your internal state comes up this cable. Second, it's wired into your heart in a way you can watch in real time: your heart rate ticks up a little as you inhale and settles as you exhale. That small rhythm is the vagus doing its job, and it's the loose thread the useful techniques pull on.
Vagal tone, and why people won't stop saying it
The phrase you'll see everywhere is vagal tone. It's shorthand for how responsive that rest-and-digest system is, and it's usually estimated through heart rate variability, the tiny beat-to-beat differences in your pulse. Higher variability at rest tends to travel with better stress recovery and emotional regulation; chronically low variability tends to travel with the opposite. Note the word travel. This is correlation doing a lot of heavy lifting, and the wellness industry loves to quietly upgrade it to a promise. Toning your vagus is not a dial you crank to buy yourself a calmer life. But the underlying system is real, and it does respond to inputs, so the question worth asking is which inputs.
What the evidence actually points to: your breath
Here's the one that survives scrutiny. A detailed review out of Leiden University laid out what the authors called the respiratory vagal stimulation model: the idea that a large share of the calming payoff from breath-based practices, from yoga to meditation to plain slow breathing, comes from the way slow breathing engages the vagus nerve, especially on the exhale (Gerritsen & Band, 2018, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience). Breathe slowly, stretch out the exhale, and you're leaning on the exact rest-facing machinery everyone's trying to hack. No device required. The nerve doesn't know if you paid for the experience.
Your exhale is the closest thing you have to a manual override on your own nervous system.
This is why the breathing crowd and the vagus crowd keep describing the same handful of results with different vocabulary. They're pointing at one mechanism. If you already have a slow-breathing habit, congratulations, you've been stimulating your vagus nerve this whole time and can cancel the newsletter.
The techniques actually worth your time
Ranked roughly by evidence-to-effort, here's what's worth trying, all of it free:
- Slow breathing with a long exhale. The main event. Aim for an exhale longer than your inhale, somewhere around five or six breaths a minute. This is the one I'd keep if I could only keep one.
- Humming, chanting, or a long sighed 'voo.' The vagus passes near the vocal apparatus, and the vibration plus the naturally extended exhale of humming gives you two nudges at once. It feels ridiculous on a quiet subway car. Do it anyway when nobody's around.
- A splash of cold. Cold water on the face or a cold end to a shower can trigger a brief slowing response. The effect is modest and short, and standing under freezing water is not most people's idea of relaxation, so I file this under occasionally useful, not daily.
Notice the list is short. That's not me being lazy; that's the honest length of it. Everything else is a variation on breathe slower or a product.
What you can skip
The consumer vagus-stimulation gadgets, the ear clips and the wearable buzzers, are where I'd keep your wallet shut. Genuine vagus nerve stimulation via an implanted device is a real medical treatment for specific conditions, and the marketing borrows all of its credibility from that clinical work while delivering something much fainter and far less proven. If a hundred-dollar clip actually rewired your stress response, it would not be sold next to phone chargers. Save the money, spend the ninety seconds on your exhale, and be honestly skeptical of anyone promising a shortcut around that.
How I actually use this
My version has no equipment. When a day has gone sideways, on the platform, after a call that ran long, before the one I'm dreading, I breathe out slower than I breathe in for about a minute and let the count be dull on purpose. When I want the counting handled for me, I run the 4-7-8 exercise in Feelsy, which is exhale-weighted by design, and I let a slow dark texture hold my eyes so I'm not also doom-scrolling with the other thumb. That's the entire hack. One nerve, one lever, and the lever was free the whole time.
