Why Lullabies Work (Even on Adults)
Lullabies calm babies in every culture on Earth, and the machinery they work on never leaves us. Here is the science of the world's oldest sleep sound.

Somewhere tonight, on every inhabited continent, a tired adult is singing quietly to a small person who does not understand a single word of it. The melody will be slow, the pitch soft, the phrases long and falling. It will work, more often than not. And what should astonish us, though we rarely pause over it, is that it would work almost as well anywhere else on Earth. I have come to think of lullabies as the original sleep technology: older than the bed, older than the written word, certainly older than every app on your phone. Why the shape soothes
What is it about that shape? Consider what a nervous system is listening for when it decides whether to stand down. Slowness matters: a tempo near or below a resting heartbeat suggests a world with no emergencies in it. Softness matters: quiet sounds mean nothing large is approaching. Predictability matters most of all: a melody that repeats its little circuit again and again lets the brain's forecasting machinery relax, because every prediction comes true. There is nothing to monitor, and monitoring is precisely what an anxious mind at midnight cannot stop doing.
