Cognitive Shuffling: How to Bore Your Brain to Sleep

Cognitive shuffling is the sleep technique where random, meaningless images walk your brain to sleep. What it is, why it may work, and how to try it tonight.

It's 1:40 a.m. and your brain has decided this is the moment to draft an email, relitigate a conversation from 2019, and calculate whether you can afford a bigger apartment (you can't, this is New York). You know you should 'clear your mind,' which as advice goes is right up there with 'just be taller.' Here's a technique with a better idea: don't clear your mind, clutter it. On purpose, with nonsense. It's called cognitive shuffling, and it sounds too dumb to work, which is my favorite category of thing to investigate.

What cognitive shuffling is

The technique comes from Luc Beaudoin, a cognitive scientist at Simon Fraser University, who developed it under the considerably worse name 'serial diverse imagining' (Beaudoin, 2014). The idea: feed your brain a stream of random, unrelated, emotionally neutral images, one after another, with no story connecting them. Lemon. Scaffolding. A canoe. Your aunt's kettle. Each one pictured briefly, then dropped for the next.

The standard way to run it is with letters. Pick a neutral seed word, say 'cargo.' Take the first letter, C, and generate words that start with it: cat, and you picture a cat. Coffee, picture a coffee. Cliff, picture a cliff. When C runs dry, move on to A and repeat. No word is allowed to matter, and no two images are allowed to link up into a plot. That's the entire method. You are, functionally, boring your brain out of consciousness.

Why nonsense might beat counting sheep

The logic is sneakier than it looks. Beaudoin's starting observation was about what falling-asleep brains actually do. As people drift off, thought naturally fragments: coherent planning dissolves into loose, drifting, disconnected imagery, the half-dream stuff of the hypnagogic zone. An insomniac brain is doing the opposite: running tightly structured, connected thought. Problems, rehearsals, timelines. Shuffling is an attempt to impersonate the way a sleepy brain thinks and let the impersonation become real.

There's a blocking effect too. Rumination needs mental machinery: attention, imagery, sequencing. Random images occupy exactly those circuits. You can't relitigate 2019 while picturing a kangaroo, a kite and a kettle in sequence; the channel is busy. Unlike 'think about nothing,' which hands your worry loop an empty stage, shuffling gives it a rival act.

Now the evidence, delivered with my usual enthusiasm for fine print. The foundational paper is a design analysis, not a clinical trial (Beaudoin, 2014). A follow-up study with colleagues tested serial diverse imagining in students with bedtime complaints, against a structured problem-solving exercise, and reported encouraging results on pre-sleep arousal, presented at the SLEEP 2016 meeting (Beaudoin, Digdon, O'Neill and Rachor, 2016). That's promising and thin: small samples, self-report, conference-stage rather than journal-stage. What the technique has going for it is a plausible mechanism, encouraging early data, zero cost, and no downside worse than feeling mildly ridiculous.

How to shuffle, step by step

  1. Get fully ready for sleep first, lights out. This is a lying-down technique.
  2. Pick a bland seed word, five or more letters, nothing emotional. 'Bedtime' is fine. 'Deadline' is not.
  3. Take the first letter and generate a word from it. Picture the thing for a slow beat or two, then let it go.
  4. Keep pulling new words from that letter; when it runs dry, move to the next letter of your seed word.
  5. If a word sparks a storyline or a feeling, drop it and pick another. Boring is the entire point.

If words aren't your thing

Some brains don't shuffle verbally, and the visual route works on the same principle: a slow stream of unconnected, low-stakes things to watch, no plot, no stakes. This is, not coincidentally, most of what Feelsy is. I'll put a slow texture on with autoplay mode handling the transitions, cream folding, orbs drifting, and let the app do the shuffling while my eyes just attend; a couple of rounds of the 4-7-8 exercise first brings everything down to the right tempo. Whether the diverse images come from inside your head or off a screen you're about to put down, the job is identical: give the planning brain nothing to build with.

The fine print

Shuffling is a technique for the ordinary awful nights, the revved brain that won't idle down. It is not a treatment for chronic insomnia, and if most nights are a fight, the well-evidenced route is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and a conversation with a professional. Also, expect to be bad at it at first. The worry loop has seniority and will grab the microphone back; the move is to notice and return to the next letter, exactly like every other attention practice. Somewhere around the fourth or fifth word, if it's working, you'll notice the images starting to drift on their own, showing up without being invited. That's the handoff. Don't inspect it, you'll scare it off. Let the kangaroo have the stage.
