There's a fan in my apartment that's been running since roughly the Obama administration. It's loud, it's ugly, and it is the only reason I sleep in a building where the radiator clanks like a blacksmith's shop and the guy upstairs apparently bowls at 2 a.m. For years I called what it made 'white noise,' because that's the term everybody uses. Turns out I was wrong about the color. What actually helps me, and probably you, is closer to pink.
So what is pink noise, exactly
Noise gets sorted by color the way light does, based on which frequencies carry the most energy. White noise spreads its power evenly across every frequency your ear can hear, which is why it sounds bright and a little harsh, like TV static or a hair dryer. Pink noise tilts the balance. It carries more energy in the low frequencies and less in the high ones, dropping off steadily as the pitch climbs. The result sounds fuller and softer: steady rain, wind through trees, a distant waterfall, the low roar of a big fan. Your ear reads it as natural rather than electronic, and that difference is the whole point.
The reason pink noise sounds 'balanced' to us is that human hearing is itself lopsided. We're wired to notice high frequencies more, a squeaky wheel, a baby's cry, so a sound with equal energy everywhere feels top-heavy and tiring. Pink noise didn't get its reputation from a marketing team. It got it from a small but genuinely interesting sleep experiment. Researchers at Northwestern played quiet bursts of pink noise to older adults while they slept, timed to sync with the slow brain waves of deep sleep. The people who got the sound showed bigger, deeper slow-wave activity, and the next morning they remembered word pairs they'd learned the night before markedly better than when they slept in silence (Papalambros et al., 2017, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience). The sound wasn't putting them to sleep. It was making the deep sleep they were already in a little deeper.
A couple of honest caveats, because I promised you the sceptic's version. That study used precisely timed bursts locked to each person's brain rhythm, not a track looping on your nightstand. The group was small and older, an age when deep sleep naturally thins out and has the most room to improve. Nobody has proven that eight hours of generic pink noise from a phone speaker will juice a healthy twentysomething's memory. What the research does support is narrower and still useful: pink noise is a plausible, low-risk way to nudge deep sleep, and it's a genuinely good masking sound.

White, pink, brown: a quick field guide
Since we're talking colors, here's the cheat sheet, because the names sound made up but the differences are real and you can hear them.
- White noise: equal energy across all frequencies. Bright, hissy, a little sharp. Great at blanketing sudden sounds, but some people find it fatiguing over a whole night.
- Pink noise: more low end, gentle high-frequency rolloff. Sounds like steady rain or wind. The natural-feeling middle option, and the one with the sleep research attached.
- Brown noise: even heavier on the bass, a deep rumble like a jet cabin or heavy surf. Warm and enveloping; a lot of people who find white noise annoying land here instead.
There's no universally correct color. The best one is the one your particular nervous system stops noticing fastest, because the goal isn't to hear a beautiful sound, it's to give your brain something so steady and uneventful that it quits scanning the room for threats.
Why any of this works at all
The mechanism isn't mystical. Your brain never fully stops listening, even asleep. In a quiet room, every isolated sound, a door, a text buzz, your neighbor's midnight bowling, stands out sharply against the silence and can drag you up toward waking. A steady wash of noise raises the background floor so those spikes don't tower over it anymore. The clank still happens; it just doesn't win. Pink noise does this job especially well because its warm, low-tilted profile masks the low rumbles of a city, traffic, elevators, footsteps, without the icy hiss that makes some people grind their teeth.
How to actually try it
You don't need to buy anything with a brain-wave sensor. Play a pink-noise or steady-rain track at a volume just loud enough to soften the room, not so loud that it's a presence of its own. If you can still clearly make out the pink noise ten minutes in, it's probably a touch high. Keep it consistent night to night so it becomes a cue your body reads as 'we're doing this now.' And give it more than one evening; a sound your brain is still evaluating on night one becomes wallpaper by night four, which is exactly what you want.
